2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change

The agreement “aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change…by holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels….” For the first time, the accord lays out a longer-term plan for reaching a peak in greenhouse emissions "as soon as possible" and achieving a balance between output of man-made greenhouse gases and absorption—by forests or the oceans—"by the second half of this century."
