Star Gazing Party
Spirit Mound
The Star Gazing Party has been rescheduled to this date from the previous April 21st date that has been canceled.
USD Telescopers Club is inviting everyone for a Star Gazing Party at the Spirit Mound parking lot!
We will begin by observing the Sun spots with one of our telescopes with a special sun filter. During the sunset, we set up three other telescopes at the parking lot to observe the Moon and Venus. Finally, when the sky gets completely dark, we will enjoy the lack of city lights and will spot Mars and the Orion Nebula. In addition, we will take a journey through the spring constellations and learn all about the ancient legends behind them!
Our physics students and faculty will be helping everyone to learn how to use our telescopes and take beautiful astronomical pictures with your own smartphones! If you have your own telescope or binoculars, feel free to bring them too! Our event is open to people of all ages and backgrounds, so feel free to ask questions!
Please note that we are not planning to bring the telescopes to the top of the Spirit Mound and will only use them at the parking lot. Note that the weather is never perfectly predictable and in case of rain and clouds, our event has been rescheduled to April 28th.
Spirit Mound is 6 miles north of Vermillion on Highway 19. We encourage you to consider carpooling to Spirit Mound. If you need transportation to Spirit Mound, please contact Meghann Jarchow (meghann.jarchow@usd.edu).
